Many vapers remain confused about whether they are permitted to take their devices and e-liquid on planes as hand luggage. Find out what you need to know by reading on.
An increasingly popular activity
E-cigarettes and vaping have become extremely popular over recent years, and cigarette smokers are becoming an increasingly rare sight. However, if you are due to travel abroad and do not know whether you will be able to take your device with you or not, we can help.
Why is there so much confusion about flying and vaping?
One of the reasons why there is so much confusion around the topic of vaping in airports is that it has taken a long time for various airports to make their policies clear. Policies can vary wildly from one airport or airline to another, so it is always worth checking with the organisation in question before you go ahead and attempt to board your plane with your device. It is illegal to actually use your e-cigarette in any UK airport, although there was briefly a vaping area at Heathrow several years ago.

Can I transport my e-cigarette in my hold baggage?
You can only store your e-cigarette as part of your carry-on luggage and will not be able to place it in your hold baggage. This is the case whether you are travelling overseas or to another UK airport. When it comes to e-liquid, you will not be able to carry any container over 100ml. It will also need to be treated the same way as other liquids in that you will need to carry it in a clear plastic bag.
Can I take my e-cigarette on the plane if I do not use it?
Using your e-cigarette on board a plane is banned by all major UK airlines. However, you should be permitted to carry it. We do advise you to check with the airline before you proceed just in case carrying it is also prohibited. If an airline has not explicitly stated that the use of e-cigarettes is banned, you can always contact them to check. However, it is unlikely you will be given the green light to vape whilst you fly.
Do I need to consider my destination before I take my device with me?
Yes. Vaping is not as popular in some countries, and some territories do not permit the import of these devices. For this reason, it is essential to check what the laws are before you take your device into another country. Even if you are permitted to take your device into another country, there may be strict limitations on where you can use it.
Vaping is banned in Singapore, and you can only use your device in places where smoking is also permitted in New York. You may also find it hard to get hold of fresh e-liquid once you arrive at your destination, which means you may need to take an ample amount of juice with you. The vaping trend is yet to reach some territories, so the authorities may question you about your device once you arrive.
