The IBVTA response to the report
A May 2021 report from the Royal College of Physicians has been welcomed by the Independent British Vaping Trading Association (IBVTA) and the wider vaping community. The report, entitled “Smoking and health 2021- A coming of age for tobacco control?” included a range of recommendations for the forthcoming Tobacco Control Plan of England. It was issued six decades after a 1962 report which exposed the dangers of tobacco smoking.
The UK’s smoke-free targets
The report says the UK is unlikely to meet its “Smokefree 2030 ambitions to reduce smoking prevalence” if the country’s commitment to eradicating smoking is not fundamentally renewed. Smokefree 2030 aims to reduce the number of smokers to less than 5% by the year in question.
Smoking still one of the UK’s biggest killers
In 2020, smoking killed more people in the UK than Covid-19. The report suggests that VAT on vaping products should be reduced to 5% to encourage more smokers to switch to the activity. It also recommends that the Government should invest more money in media campaigns to promote the use of vaping to replace smoking. The report also says more needs to be done to promote the relative safety of vaping in comparison to cigarette smoking.

Report recommendations
The report also said that the reputation of vaping had been harmed due to reports on lung problems that were in actual fact caused by illegal cannabis products used in North America. The Royal College of Physicians also want cigarette packaging to include positive messages about switching to vaping. It also suggests that smoke-free policies in buildings and other public places should not also cover vaping. Another recommendation is that healthcare professionals promote vaping to treat dependence on tobacco.
Other suggestions from the RCP
The Royal College of Physicians also want to see tobacco industry donations to political parties and politicians outlawed. It also says tobacco activities should inform the government about their political activities and any organisations they fund. The IBVTA itself also wants more checks to be carried out on anti-vaping campaigners. IBVTA CEO Gillian Golden said: “we welcome the Royal College of Physicians’ placement of vaping as such a pivotal tool in the fight against the harms of smoking, and the urgent call to correct misperceptions about the relative harms.”
