MTL AND DTL: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Vaping DeviceIf you are new to the world of vaping and the many acronyms that are used, it can be very confusing trying to understand them all. We recently took a look at what VG and PG mean in terms of e-liquids, and today we are taking a closer look at two of the most common acronyms, DTL and MTL.

These two terms are used widely across vaping, and DTL, Direct to Lung, and MTL, Mouth to Lung, can seem strange to newcomers. They are used widely across the industry and can refer to everything from e-cigarette tanks to e-liquids. Many companies also use additional descriptions, such as restricted or tight, when talking about DTL or MTL, which only further adds to the confusion.

We know how confusing these terms can be, which is why we thought in this blog we would take a closer look at both to help improve your knowledge.

What is Mouth to Lung or MTL vaping?

Mouth to Lung, or MTL, is a vaping style that is most similar to smoking. This means that when the user draws on the e-cigarette, they will first pull the vapour into their mouth before then inhaling it into the lungs. However, unlike smoking, users need to draw gently on the device as the harder they try to pull, the less vapour they will actually get.

Because of the similarities to smoking, Mouth to Lung vaping is often the most suitable for new vapers. It is also one of the more economical methods of vaping as the user is producing less vapour and are vaporising less e-liquid with each draw.

By using less vapour, Mouth to Lung vaping is also far more inconspicuous, making it easier to subtly do it in public.

What is Direct to Lung or DTL vaping?

Direct to Lung, or DTL, is also known as sub-ohm, vaping and it is the process of inhaling the e-cigarette vapour directly into the lung as if you were taking a normal breath. This is typically a process that is preferred by those users who are more experienced with vaping, as the vapour produced is often denser, which can be a little overwhelming.

As the process is quite different from how a normal cigarette is smoked, Direct to Lung vaping can take some time to get used to. This vaping style creates more vapour and provides the user with a warming experience alongside a lower throat hit.

Why do these matter?

The way that users vape is very important as almost every part of the vaping process is now designed to suit either Mouth to Lung or Direct to Lung. For example, a DTL vape pen will feature a very open airflow through the tank, giving the user no resistance, while an MTL vape pen will have a narrower flow of air throughout the pen, including over the coil and the mouthpiece.

Not having the right vaping tank for your preferred style of vaping can make the process incredibly difficult and challenging. It is almost impossible to vape Direct to Lung using an MTL pen and vice versa. However, many vape pens on the market will come with some adjustability, and you might be able to go from a Loose MTL to a Tight MTL or restrict the airflow in your DTL.

Mouth to Lung vaping: What e-liquids should you use?

If you prefer to opt for Mouth to Lung vaping, then you will want to ensure that you are using an e-liquid that is 50% Vegetable Glycerine (VG) and 50% Propylene Glycol, with a maximum ratio being % VG.

This is because vape juice that is high in Vegetable Glycerine is typically thicker, which will result in your Mouth to Lung device struggling to soak up the e-liquid and heat it quickly. In turn, this will result in you experiencing a burnt taste from your vape juice and a shorter lifespan on your device.

When it comes to nicotine strength, Mouth to Lung vaping lets you use more nicotine, and regular vapers will use strengths that can vary from 3mg up to 20mg.

Mouth to Lung vaping: what equipment do you need?

Mouth to Lung vaping requires very simple e-cigarette pens, which are often very inexpensive. This means that starter kits are suitable and can provide a fantastic hit for users. These MTL devices utilise lower resistance coils made from thinner wires, which mean they do not provide as much power to the coil.

That is not to say that MTL vapers can only use cheap vape kits. Many of the advanced vape pens on the market are suitable for MTL users if they use lower wattage of around 15W. Typically, coil resistance for MTL vaping will range from 1 Ohm to 2.8, with the most common being 1.5.

Direct to Lung vaping: What e-liquids should you use?

When it comes to Direct to Lung vaping, then it is important that you are using an e-liquid that is low in nicotine, as DTL vaping gives you a stronger hit compared to MTL or cigarettes. A 50% VG and 50% PG vape juice can be used, but due to its slightly runnier nature can lead to the risk of a leakage.

These vape pens are usually designed to be used with thicker e-liquids, so it is best to use vape juice that features a 70% Vegetable Glycerine and 30% Propylene Glycol mix. This will help to guarantee a strong vape cloud and give users a better taste and flavour.

Direct to Lung vaping: what equipment do you need?

For those users who prefer the Direct to Lung vaping process, then the equipment needed is almost the opposite MTL. A DTL device will need to be able to have a variable wattage that can be cranked up as high as possible.

The coils in a Direct to Lung vape are typically made with thicker wires to cater for the higher wattage that is needed. A DTL vape pen is designed to be able to sustain higher temperatures and a more constant inhale.

MTL or DTL, which is right for you?

When it comes to choosing between Mouth to Lung and Device to Lung, it is an entirely personal preference. Both options have their pros and cons, and understanding the differences between the two and trying them both will ensure you find the best experience for you.

It is also important to remember that just because you might prefer one style now, it might change as you become a more experienced vaper.
