Vaping is relatively new and has given the smoker an opportunity to try a different type of product, which is much healthier and much cheaper. In this article we explore “what are the differences between vaping and smoking”?
How does vaping and cigarettes compare?
The difference between vaping and smoking is that smoking burns tobacco for you to have a nicotine hit. This can lead to many smoking-related illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, vaping heats a liquid to deliver nicotine, which is a much less harmful way.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), many people believe that smoking is much more harmful than vaping.
Is it better to smoke or vape?
This is a potentially controversial topic, smoking vs vaping. There are so many high risks involved in smoking though, which I widely known. However, vaping is a safe and effective way of quitting smoking. There are other benefits of vaping, such as:
- Vaping is significantly better for your health – Even though there is a lot of misinformation out there around the safety of vaping, it is estimated to be 95% better for your health than smoking. It also has an effectiveness for quitting smoking, meaning you are more likely to cut down or quit completely
- Vaping is cheaper than smoking – Those who smoke 20 cigarettes per day, will be spending approximately £3,000 per year. This is obviously a bit different for everyone, however, it is a good estimate. When vaping, after you have purchased your starter device, you’re more likely to just spend from £350 per year
- Second-hand vapour is not as dangerous as second-hand smoke – Even though we know the effects of smoking on the person doing it, there is much evidence that smoking affects everyone around them, too. Second-hand smoke can cause respiratory infections, ear, nose and throat infections, severe asthma, and asthma attacks and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

What happens when you switch from smoking to vaping?
There are a few things to consider when switching to vaping:
- Coughing – Most smokers cough when they first make the switch to vaping. This is because vapour can feel thicker on your throat when you start vaping, and this slight change can cause a sensation that triggers a cough. It may take a day or two to get used to the change
- Dry Mouth – The Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) that e-liquids contain, are hygroscopic. They simply absorb the water from your mouth and add it to the vapour that you breathe out. This may give you a dry mouth but drinking more water until you’re used to vaping can help
What happens to your body when you quit smoking and start vaping?
Here are some amazing statistics to back up what happens when you quit smoking and start vaping:
- In 8 hours; excess levels of carbon monoxide are removed from your bloodstream
- In 1 week; your senses such as taste and smell both improve
- In 5 days; you’ll feel better from drinking more water and less flavoured drinks
- In 3 months; your lung function begins to improve including their ability to self-clean
- 5 years+; the risk of having a stroke is dramatically decreased
- In 1 year; a pack-a-day smoker will save over £3,000
