What causes spitback when vaping? And how can I avoid it?

Find out more about what vaping spitback is, why it happens and how you can prevent it here. Spitback may be harmless, but it can be unpleasant. Read on to find out everything you need to know about stopping spitback.

What exactly is spitback?

Spitback happens when you take a puff of your vaping device and small portions of hot e-liquid hit your tongue. You may also hear a popping sound when this occurs. The heat of the e-liquid can make this occurrence highly unpleasant. However, there are things you can do to prevent it or at least reduce the frequency of it happening.

What are the causes of spitback?

The risk of spitback is increased when e-liquid hangs around your coil and is heating too quickly. This means it is ‘cooked’ instead of just vaporised. The juice can then quickly make its way up to your tank, out of your mouthpiece and onto your tongue.

What can I do to stop spitback?

You can stop large amounts of e-liquid from collecting around your coil by tapping your tank firmly but not aggressively. This should send the juice out of your mouthpiece. You can use a piece of tissue to clear up any mess. Spitback can also be prevented if you clean the inner chamber of your tank regularly. You can do this by unscrewing the tank and removing your mouthpiece so you can access it. Clean with a cotton bud to wipe away excessive juice. Pressing your power button without actually inhaling on your device can also work, as it can burn away excess liquid.

You can also try to make your inhales less deep. If you inhale too excessively, the coil may receive more juice than it can manage. This means a large amount of juice can hang around your coil without being vapourised effectively.

Do not prime too excessively

When you first add a new coil to your tank, you need to prime it to prevent dry burning. However, if you do this too enthusiastically, the wicking material can become oversaturated. Do not soak your coil before you vape. Just carefully add one drop at a time to the wick and let each one absorb before you move onto the next step.

Consider buying juice with more VG than PG

Another step you can take is to use e-liquid with more vegetable glycerine than propylene glycol. PG juices are thinner, which means they take less time to soak into your wick. This means there is a bigger risk of over-saturation.
