According to the World Health Organization, there are about 1.1 billion smokers worldwide, that is, close to one-third of the global population that is aged 15 and over. While the number is declining, the same cannot be said about vaping.
Data by Euromonitor International shows that the vaping market will grow to a US$34 billion business by 2021, which is a 176 percent spike from 2016. According to their estimates, of the 9 million smokers found in the UK, a third of them are vaping.
So, what is vaping? We go on to explore.
What is the meaning of vaping?
Vaping can be described as “the act of inhaling smoke-like vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or vape device. Vaping imitates smoking but is less harmful”.
Vaping has emerged as a great healthier alternative to smoking.
A vape often contains a vape juice (e-juice), a flavoured nicotine liquid. However, not all vapes have nicotine. It is the user who decides the amount of nicotine they would wish to use and the flavour.
In addition to nicotine (which is optional), e-liquid or vape juice in most cases contains three ingredients: propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), and flavourings.
As aforementioned, vape juice may contain different strengths of nicotine, ranging from absolutely nicotine-free, up to 20mg. According to the EU TPD E-Cigarette Regulations, 20mg is the most nicotine legally allowed in vape juices or e-cig refills.
What are PG and VG in vaping?
PG
Propylene Glycol or PG is commonly found in the food industry where it is used as a preservative. It is also found in the UK medical industry where it is used in asthma inhalers. It is a colourless liquid that has a somewhat sweet taste. In vape juices, it is mainly used as a ‘base’ ingredient. It has a lesser viscosity compared to vegetable glycerine.
VG
Vegetable Glycerine or VG is a colourless liquid that is commonly used in the food industry. It is used as a sweetener and thickener. Just like PG, it acts as a base in vape juices in addition to being a sweetener. VG can be gotten from plants or animals or synthetically. Compared to PG, VG has a thicker consistency and produces a much denser vapour.
What are some common vaping facts to know?
Now that we have learnt the meaning of vaping, let us take a look at a few vaping facts:
- Vaping is safer than smoking: From the British Royal College of Physicians and Public Health England to the American National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, they agree that vaping is much safer than smoking cigarettes. In fact, PHE says that vaping is “at least 95 percent less harmful.” As there is no combustion, there is the absence of smoke. It is smoke that brings about tar and carbon monoxide that cause the long-term health damage
- Absence of noxious odours: Another perk to vaping is that there is no lingering smell of smoke on you, your clothes, car, or in your house. It does have an aroma, but it is nothing close to the smell of stale smoke or cigarette butts
- Control over nicotine intake: With vaping, you have full control of the nicotine dosage. The vape juice is available in a diverse range of strengths, from no nicotine to high-strength nicotine. You get to choose the amount of nicotine that is in your vape
- Wide range of flavours: There is an endless list of flavours that you can have in your vape juice. Some of the most popular flavours groupings include fruit, beverages, desserts, tobacco, mint and menthol.
