What is VG (Vegetable Glycerine)?

Vegetable Glycerine (known as VG) is a commonly used term on the Next Day Vapes website and in the wider community of vaping. In this article, we explore what VG is and its role in e-liquids and vaping.

What exactly is Vegetable Glycerine?

VG or Vegetable Glycerine is also sometimes called Glycerol or Glycerin. It is a clear, odourless, syrup-like, sweet-tasting liquid made from vegetable oils. Various oils can be used to make VG including coconut, rapeseed, soya bean as well as palm oils. VG is frequently mixed with PG (Propylene Glycol) as when mixed together the two liquids create a tremendous suspension fluid, which is the based for adding flavour concentrates and nicotine to create the final e-liquid.

In what ways is VG used?

A popular part of e-liquids in vaping, VG also has many other uses. The water and alcohol solubility qualities make VG ideal for use in the cosmetics industry, in products such as aftershave, deodorant, hand creams, make-up, mousse, and shower gels. VG is also used as a food additive including in baked goods and as a sweetener. VG is ideal to add to toothpaste and also in other dental-related products.

Is VG safe?

The use of VG is very widespread, including the products mentioned above as well as a vast number of others too. VG is used in important safety-conscious industries including food and cosmetics and can safely be used as an alternative to tobacco, which contains numerous cancer-causing elements.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says about VG:

“Vegetable Glycerine is generally recognized as safe when used in accordance with good manufacturing practice.”

What role does VG play in vaping e-liquids?

Vaping with a high VG content in e-liquids (typically 60% VG+) when contrasted to higher PG mixes delivers the following benefits:

  • Milder flavour – for vapers who prefer a milder, less intense flavour VG is better than PG which tends to enhance the flavour more
  • Higher vapour – if you enjoy higher vaper clouds and a more visible trail then a higher VG mix is better. This is because VG generates increased vapour when exhaled.
  • Low allergy levels – VG has very low allergy levels, lower even than PG (which also has fairly low levels too)
  • Reduced throat hit – VG gives a reduced throat hit compared to PG. This makes a higher VG mix more suited perhaps to longer-term vapers who are not seeking the same “throat hit” sensation that traditional cigarettes give
  • Thicker consistency – VG has a much thicker consistency than PG, which tends to be thinner and runs more

Where can I buy Vegetable Glycerine for use in vaping?

We cannot emphasise enough that vaping e-liquids should always be bought from reputable dealers such as Next Day Vapes. VG can be bought separately from many sources, but when used in mixes it is important to ensure that the VG is suitable for use in vaping.
